7 Tips for Creating Content for your Business
Creating content for your business? Welcome! You’re in the right spot.
As a writer, it’s fairly easy for me to come up with content ideas at the drop of a hat. I’m creating content constantly; both for myself and in the form of marketing strategies for my clients.
Though, I understand that’s not the case for everyone. In fact, that’s why my clients come to me - to strategize what kind of content they can be creating to tell their story, sell their services, and/or increase interest in their products.
So if you’re working on your own content strategy, here are:
7 Tips for creating content for your business
Get personal. Don’t be afraid to show your face on your Instagram account or hop on to an Instagram live. Share your story or a story about why you do what you do. This gives your audience the ability to connect with you in a meaningful way.
What’s the incentive? Why should people follow you? What content are you providing and sharing that will be of interest to them? You don’t need to give things away for free all the time - instead strategize what the pull is. What kind of content can you create that makes someone tap that “follow” button without hesitation?
Share your why. Content on social media is very much about the what. What are you selling? What are you doing right now? What could you be doing if we weren’t experiencing a pandemic in 2020? Instead, share the why. Why does your business exist? And, who do you seek to support or serve? Break it down even further - why does a certain product or service make sense? Why should people work with, hire, or buy from you?
Time block. This is more logistical than the others, but important nonetheless. Writing content doesn’t always come easy (it may never come easy for you, but the hope is that we’re helping it become easier), so I suggest time blocking to make the most out of the time when you’re most productive and interested in creating content. For example, I know that I’m most productive from 8 - 11 am and again from 4 - 7 pm. So, I’ll make sure that on Monday mornings I’m creating content for the week because that’s when I’m the most ready to do so. Find the time that works for you and block that time off so you can hammer out 1-2 weeks of content at a time.
Create content buckets. This doesn’t sound glamorous (does the word bucket ever sound glamorous? I doubt it, unless we’re talking buckets of diamonds), but it’s useful. Think about all the types of content you could be sharing for your business, then break it down by (1) what’s going to be most useful to you and your business, and (2) what you enjoy creating most. Then, pull the top 3-5 content buckets (or categories, if you prefer that term) and start creating content within those buckets. They’ll keep you in check because you’ll know exactly which buckets you’ve been focusing on more than others, and when to start switching it up.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. I get questions from many of my clients about being rigid in sharing only what’s worked in the past. But, how would they have known that it worked if they hadn’t tried it out the first time? I highly recommend experimenting with creating content - try something new/different/exciting. Social media changes daily, why shouldn’t your content evolve, too?
Have fun with it. Social media is useful, beneficial, and inevitable. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it. If you don’t, you’re not going to want to dedicate time to it. So yes, share the content that performs well and gets your business out there, but share content you love, too! One of my favorite ways to do this is by sharing whatever I please in Instagram stories - they disappear after 24 hours and don’t need to fit in with your feed by any means.
So, have some fun, experiment, and play. I can’t wait to see what you create!
