How to start marketing a small business

Marketing a small business doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how to start.

If you’re here, that means you’re on the small business path. That may mean you’re totally new to it and finding your footing (you will!) or it could mean that you’ve got a few years under your belt and you’re ready to start investing in marketing your small business.

Wherever on that spectrum you currently find yourself, I’m excited you’re here. I’ve been working in marketing in its various forms for nearly 10 years and here’s what I can tell you - it works.

I’ve worked with clients who have completely sold out of their product in one day and clients who were able to open up a whole new world for their small business.

Here’s where to start with your own marketing.

Understand your ideal community

First and foremost, we want to ensure you’re getting in front of your ideal community.

Ask yourself questions like these:

  1. Where is my audience? Are they engaging on Instagram? Are they scrolling on Tik Tok for hours at a time? You’ll want to go where they already are.

  2. What do they like? What are they like? What are their hobbies? How do they spend their time? What are their goals?

  3. Where are they currently shopping? What other brands are they engaging with already?

  4. How can you solve their problem or provide a better alternative to something they’re already doing/purchasing?

Once you’ve answered those as best as you can, start connecting with your ideal community. Next up, listening.

Listen first

Get in touch with members of your ideal community. Ask them questions! Let them tell you about their experiences. Listen to them, really hear them. Take their needs and asks into consideration. Learn from them.

Listen first, and then talk. Once you’re ready to hit the ground running (does it ever feel like we’re truly ready? I don’t think so, but you’ll know when it’s time), start talking.

For someone to buy from you/hire you, they need to know exactly what it is you’re offering and how your product/service fits into their life. Show them your differentiator - what makes you the best fit for them.

Explore content marketing

Content marketing is all about creating content with value that drives interest for your business/brand. Think, articles with tips and tricks that are helpful for your ideal client and how-to pieces that teach something.

It’s an incredible way to get your small business out there. For starters, it’s free. Aside from the cost of your website, you pay zip for publishing content on your business’s website.

It lets your expertise shine and instills a sense of trust with your clients and customers.

There’s so much you can do with content marketing and I want to help you. So, here are 7 content marketing tips for growing your small business.

Just……start

We all have to start somewhere. Your first go at marketing your business isn’t going to be perfect, nor is your next or the one after that. We’re all human.

A friend of mine shared a sentiment that I’m now referring to on a daily basis.

Stop getting ready to get ready.

If you’re sitting on that campaign idea or waiting to publish your first blog post - go for it. Just….start.
